SONGKRAN PATTAYA

The best water fight in the world!

Yes, the Thai New Year is coming and Songkran 2015 is not far away, you know that you have to be in Pattaya for the fun, so plan your holiday between the 13th – 19th in April.

Songkran in Thailand is the celebration of the Thai New Year, between the 13th and 15th of April, Pattaya extends this celebration until the 19th of April and City Hall calls the extended days “Wan Lai” festival, which translates as “the day that flows”. But we just call it Songkran.

Songkran in Pattaya is more than an event, it is best described like a volcano erupting, building and growing more intense every day, until it climaxes in a flooding of water and fun, with a whole lot of chaos and laughter mixed in.

Songkran in Pattaya is celebrated on the 19th of April every year and gets going as early as the 10th, with those who just can’t wait to wet someone, breaking out the artillery at the first available time, and putting them to good use in the scorching Thai summer.

Click the link above to see what you are in for, with the best, most fun, week-long party in Pattaya, nothing comes close to this spectacle, and that’s why ½ a million people try to flood into Pattaya on the 19th, they come from all over Thailand and the world to be part of this event, traffic grinds to a halt for kilometers in every direction, Sukhumvit Rd is in gridlock as far north as Nakluea as Songkran revellers descend on Pattaya from Bangkok.

It’s been described as a week-long wet t-shirt competition, water world on steroids, love it or hate it, Songkran in Pattaya spells – FUN, FUN, FUN.

While Songkran traditionally is a simple ceremony to bring good luck and cleansing, to wash away everything bad and make it new, Songkran in Pattaya has evolved into something else, it is now a full throttle, drunken, water combat zone to bring in the Thai New Year, it is celebrated on different dates around Thailand, and is very popular in Bangkok and Chang mai, and most of Essan, but it is especially crazy in Pattaya, where it runs nonstop for 48 hrs, all night, between the 18th and 19th of April.

WHAT IT’S REALLY ABOUT

Without doubt, this is the biggest, best, longest, most fun celebration on the annual Pattaya calendar and is becoming world famous, with numbers growing every year.

FOR THE THAI’S

Songkran is the beginning of the new astrological year, a chance to make everything new, and begin again. It’s a cleansing time and the use of water symbolizes the washing away of negative things in one’s life, so…, cleaning the house, cleaning the car and motorbike, cleaning the Buddha statues with clean or scented water is the order of the day, giving alms to monks for merit and gently sprinkling water on others and wishing them a happy new year (“Sawasdee be mai” in Thai) there are public parades as Buddha images are towed around on trailers with monks blessing those who want it, water pouring ceremonies for the elders and a Miss Songkran Pageant for the most beautiful lady in a traditional Thai Costume.

FOR THE FORIEGNERS

It’s a great chance to cool off in the sweltering Thai summer heat and get involved with the not so serious side of Songkran, concentrating on the water play and having fun.

Apart from the water fight, there will be food, drinks and entertainment everywhere during the day on the 19th of April.  Parades, music concerts, water stations and medical help will be near by.

DO’S AND DONT’S PATTAYA GUIDE

While Songkran is a lot of fun, things can go wrong very quickly while in the moment and people do get hurt during Songkran, excitement and emotional levels are high, and adrenaline levels are out of control, mix this with alcohol, and you have an accident just waiting to happen, so please use some common sense and be considerate of others while Songkraning

DO

Do have a good time, that’s what it’s all about.

Do buy a water soaker to wet others in a fun manner, costs 50 – 500 Baht.

Do get a sealed plastic bag for your valuables and electronics to keep them dry and safe, street hawkers and vendors will be selling them in great numbers during the event for about 40 – 50 Baht.

Do expect to be soaked with a bucket of icey cold water at any time from any direction.

Do take safety precautions, it’s a good idea to wear eye protection, also, dress for conditions, the weather during Songkran is very sunny, hot and humid, casual clothes, good footwear and a hat are essential, and a good dollop of sunscreen will help you too.

Do take care when travelling, this is the most dangerous time to be on the roads in Thailand, road accidents and deaths skyrocket during Songkran and despite the huge police presence, numbers rise every year.

DON’T

Don’t shoot people in the face and eyes with high powered water cannons, causing injuries to others is not in the spirit of this event and deliberate malicious and bad behaviour is not welcome.

Don’t shoot people in the face of those who are riding motorbikes, it is dangerous and if you cause an accident, then you could beheld responsible for all damage and injuries done, and spend your Songkran in jail. $$$.

Don’t wet people after dark who are not armed and Songkraning, those who are dressed nicely on their way out to eat or enjoy the Pattaya nightlife.

Don’t wet people who are talking on their phone, destroying other people’s property is not a good idea unless you like the idea of buying new i-phones for compensation. $$$.

Don’t get naked, yes every year, many over excited, drunk, revellers take it a bit far and get their gear off and parade around exposing themselves to the general public, they can and do get hauled off to the police station to settle down for a bit after acting to provocatively during the celebrations.

Songkran is a special event and you have to be here to appreciate the gravity of the fun during this festival,  this is 1 to put on your “to do list” and come and try for yourself, Songkran 2015 promises to be bigger and better than ever, so…

see you here in April.
